<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">
Namelijk: Testen.

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">
Verschillende methoden

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">
Er wordt bijvoorbeeld een formule gebruikt, lijkend op het opstellen van een user story: Given… when…. Then…..

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">
Men noemt dat ‘Specification by example’ (ref 2)

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">
(ref 3)

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">
Geautomatiseerd checken
(ref 4)

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">
(ref 5)

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">
(ref 6 & 7)

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

<ul style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; list-style-type: none; margin: 1em 0px 1em 11px; padding: 0px;">

Acceptatiecriteria promoten het werken in ‘waterval modus’

Acceptatiecriteria verstevigen de onbewuste vooringenomenheid van bevestiging

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

<blockquote style="background: url("images/postquote.png") no-repeat scroll rgb(239, 242, 245); clear: both; color: #0d1216; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; font-style: italic; line-height: 22.75px; margin: 10px 0px 0px 25px; overflow: auto; padding: 10px 10px 10px 47px;">

Geen risico’s? Niet testen!

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #303f50; font-family: Arial, "Arial Unicode MS", Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22.75px; margin-bottom: 13px; margin-top: 13px; padding: 0px;">

Mijn eerste reactie was: Whaaat?

Voorjaarsvakanties?
http://www.schoolvakanties-nederland.nl/schoolvakanties-2015.html

Wat is Session Based Test Management?

Brochure: http://improveqs.nl/files/Brochure2015/Brochure_SBTM_NL_2015.pdf

It can be thought of as structured exploratory testing

Session-Based Test Management is a way to organize exploratory testing

SBTM is a systematic approach to documenting and estimating testing.

Agile, waterval of anders.

Tim Western @Veretax
I wonder if anyone has collected some of the most famous (or infamous) quotes relating to software testing.

A while ago I searched the internet for testing Quotes to make a list of my own to use for tweeting or to put on my website, or whatever... But I never did do anything with it. But the tweet reminded me of this effort. I tweeted in reply some quotes from the list I made:

“Quality is free, but only to those who are willing to pay heavily for it.” – T. DeMarco and T. Lister

“Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of intelligent effort.” – John Ruskin

"A good model guides your thinking, a bad one warps it." - Brian Marick

"Testing a product is a learning process." - Brian Marick

“Actual tests are part of planning too. At least, they can be, if done consciously.” - Shmuel Gershon

"If you're gonna manage testers or any highly cognitive work, then you need to participate in the work.” - James Bach

“Exploratory Testing is not so much a thing that you do; it's far more a way that you think.“ - Michael Bolton

“Pay attention to zeros. If there is a zero, someone will divide by it.” - Cem Kaner

“If you don’t care about quality, you can meet any other requirement” - Gerald M. Weinberg

These are the short quotes that fit into a tweet. The list I made had much longer quotes. I got these quotes from Twitter but most of them from some websites. So here are the websites I checked, enjoy them!

This because I wrote to them about my side-project I've done in my spare time, the website and service to testers via testevents.com

This was my entry

Setting up a worldwide calendar for test
conferences

This is an overview of a small and personal
project, it’s maybe a different kind of ‘testing project’ as you would expect
to see as an entry for TESTA. Not a project in which software is tested (although
during creating of the website I did test all features), but still with the
goal of delivering quality information about a specific subject. This is a
contribution from me to the test community, which started off as a hobby and
now is part of my daily work as a tester. An idea that started a few years ago,
without realising I then would start seriously with a website. But also a
project that has no ending and is evolution based in nature because there is no
hurry, no stress, no limitations in time and very low to no budget.

And am I happy with this?

Of course it is great to be nominated and to be in such a kind of position as a one-man company. I really try to put something into my special project. But still I have some mixed feelings about it. It is great to put a logo like this on my blog and website, but otherwise... I don't like going to award ceremonies! I'd rather be at a great testing event evening or have dinner with some testers I know, talking about testing we did and do.

Some things that made me suspicious

It was strange to be called by the organisation more than once to ask me to enter for this award. They really tried to convince me to enter on more than one category.

I had to pay to enter the awards

I had a lot of calls to buy a 'table' for the awards or a place and they were really trying to sell that too: "If your name is called out and you are not there..."

Award evenings can be fun as part of a test conference, this is really a stand-alone show, even with a well-known host from the British X-factor

So, some suspicious mind I guess? Maybe I misplaced their enthusiasm for 'trying to sell', I don't know yet. I guess such an award could help getting testing noticed more with companies and also the importance of it in the IT industry, because we still have a long way to go on that one.

Why did I enter?
Two reasons:

I'm very proud on my website testevents.com and what I did last year with the website. I know a lot of people use the website to their advance and I'm glad to help out.

Maybe it is a good and a cheap marketing / advertising opportunity. My budget is very limited, still I want more people in the testing world to at least know about the website.

Do I even want to win?

Yes of course, I only don't like a stand-alone award ceremony 'show' for which you have to suit up. And even that I could survive, because you can do a lot of networking on this evening. But the costs of not working for a few days, travelling and hotels is too much for this kind of event. -for me-

Exploratory Testing <> monkey testing

I needed to create some test data for an application. The data in an XML file was to be imported in the application under test. I wanted an application that I could run without installing and showed me a physical overview. I found this simple XML editor and used it. And I like it.

What does it do?

It has a tree view and the XML and you can view the data and edit data in the XML. If something is wrong with the data, the tree view will display that. I use it at this moment in combination with Excel, in which I create the data for testing a specific feature. So in fact I'm using the tools of tools also (MS Excel).

In Excel I create some test data in the first tab. The overview, group, block, chapter numbers on the top are used in the "screen" test data, just by using simple formulas as ="Chapter "&B6&", lesson "&B7.
On the second Tab in Excel I've got the XML with simple formulas as above filled in the XML that I first copied out of Foxe XML editor.

This looks like this at the moment.

I put the colors there for readability. And now I can copy & paste it into Foxe.

Very simple and effective to quickly create some test data. You don't have to be an XML expert to do this and this tool helps a bit by showing a tree view and possible problems in the XML.

How does it look?

On the left there is a representation of the XML in a tree

You are seeing green icons, one with red, one with a yellow dot. Apparently something is wrong with the red and yellow items.

Just double click on a tree branch and on the right the section higlights for easy searching.

There are some tools, for example XHTML validation and you can even script with this tool, but I didn't research that yet.

So, very good tool for the "I'm a new tester in XML", but also usable with script features for researching XML files for the more experienced. See their website www.firstobject.com for more info and a video introduction.

Even since I learned about this tool from Michael Bolton, I have it ready somewhere in a tools directory or I download it again from the James Bach website (www.satisfice.com)
Great for filling up fields with data and keep track of the number of characters you put in there for example (this is the simplest form for using it)

What does it do?
With this small tool you can create strings easily to test edit boxes or testdata files.

Counterstring 255 (I use this one the most) creates for example:
*3*5*7*9*12*15*18*21*24*27*30*33*36*39*42*45*48*51*54*57*60*63*66*69*72*75*78*81*84*87*90*93*96*99*103*107*111*115*119*123*127*131*135*139*143*147*151*155*159*163*167*171*175*179*183*187*191*195*199*203*207*211*215*219*223*227*231*235*239*243*247*251*255*

The star to the right of the number is the x character in a pattern, so you can check for length of fields, memo fields, import file data length that is really imported into a database...

That kind of stuff.

The readme file with the tools has great examples for what you can do with this great little, light fantastic tool. Another example: just download it and read the readme:

'$allchars' produces a string that includes all character codes from 1 to 255 (0 not included).

This is a tool I use very often the last few years to help me logging my Exploratory testing sessions. I love this tool because it is very simple and effective. And also because you don't have to install it.

What does it do?

With this tool you enter one text lines in a small Window that is placed somewhere on your screen, you can drag it anywhere. The text you enter is placed in an Comma Separated Value file, so you can read what you tested after you've finished. It has a time clock for 90 minutes (default setting, I never changed this), so you can time box your exploratory session. And that's it. A test log is created on your disk, so you won't be bothered to switch to notepad, excel or something else you are using.

If you never create test logs for your ET it is a great tool to start doing that, because of the easy way to do it. I use it to create checklists afterwards, us it as a reproducing report for bugs to give to developers, and for future reference. What did I do the last few days? In my current project I will use the logs as input for developers to create automated test scripts.

How does it look?

When it's started, it is a very small Window with a few buttons and one field to enter notes.

There is a button for creating a screenshot on the left (for example, to capture the moment)

There is also a button where you can enter specific notes for the complete test session you are doing

There is a slider on the left where you can set transparency of the app, so it will not attract attention too much when your are concentrating on the software you are testing.

The blue bar is a progress bar for the timer of 90 minutes and will fil the edit box. After 90 minutes you still can continue and it will not make you stop.

With the arrow keys [up] and [down], you can select a specific log type. The picture says "Test:". With the arrow [up] key it goes to "notes", with the arrow [down] key it goes to "Check:"

There is also "Bug" for example, this bug: option will show red in a HTML file you can create of the logfile.

How do I start?

Just go to the website where you can download the tool and read the instruction manual. It is very simple and easy to use it. http://testing.gershon.info/reporter/

Answer: Because I want my customer not to be embarrassed by his software when it is placed in production.

I was asked to enter a contest. I had to fill in a register form, activate my account via an email link and then fill in the necessary information, pay and then go on with my life happily ever after.
This evening I ended with a WTF feeling and sending a mail: (names changed and somewhat rewritten to put it into context for you to read)

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear John,

I had some problems with the website.

The project that I wanted to enter as an example did not really fit into any of your categories, so I just entered a most likely category, although I do not feel this is right.

What are the payments methods? Couldn't find it on the site so I checked for payments methods while I was in the registration form. (I already filled in all my personal information)

When I did that I was immediately logged out by the system and could not log in again. The system told me 'wrong password' (I am almost sure I've got the right password)

I tried to enter your website again via the activation link in the e-mail, but got error this message:

*****************************
Oops! An Error Occurred
The server returned a "404 Not Found".
Something is broken. Please e-mail us at [email] and let us know what you were doing when this error occurred. We will fix it as soon as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
*****************************

I did not give up and tried the link on the site to "reset your password"

I received the mail with the password reset link.

When I clicked the link I cannot fill in the new password on you website, because the menu "Why enter" collapses over the edit boxes when I get near the edit box for a new password with my mouse pointer.

So I cannot enter a new password.

See attached image for that...

I tried copy/paste the "reset password" link into Internet Explorer, but there too I could not fill in a new password.

Now I gave up

(Although I am certain I entered a good password to start with)

Tegenmaatregelen beheren*

Risico analyse

People management*

Planning

Strategie

Estimation*

Prioritering

Overdracht*

Communicatie en rapporteren

Requirements

Exit criteria bepalen

Change management

Reputatie*

Testproces begeleiden*

(kwaliteit)
I will be doing two workshops on the Test Automation Day in June, Rotterdam

On the 13th of May I did a workshop at the TestNet Spring event in The Netherlands about test management with opensource tooling Testlink and Mantis. And I liked doing it, so now a new workshop at the Test Automation Day in Rotterdam

Name of the workshop: Discovering tools for testing we use daily
Date: 19th of June 2013, Rotterdam
The participants of this workshop will share information of the tools they use, categorize the tools and talk about their favorite tools.

Small presentation by moderator (background & explanation of workshop)

Discussion about different kinds of tools (categorizing)

Papers on walls with categories (moderator with participants)

Participants will write down their tools per category (and own name for reference)

Explanation by participants of (some) tools

Maybe some demos if participants want to do so

If there are Laptops around even in groups checking out tools (but I guess this is totally dependent on the situation)

So it’s a relaxed workshop, with fun, but with high interactivity. The number of tools on the papers, the number of participants and how much they are willing to actively participate, influences the workshop, so that it fits the specific group at the moment.

I said "two workshops". The second one will be the next day, the 20th of June in the Testlab at the Test Automation Day.

This will be something like the first day, that will depend on the number of participants and your feedback.
Will I see you there?

Standaard applicaties (zoals MS-office)

Undo functionaliteit gebruiken, Redo

Verder voor iedereen: reacties welkom!!Rob van Steenbergenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12890592919979435124noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-951624801098504944.post-14328844916824338842012-11-28T01:14:00.000-08:002012-11-28T01:14:39.715-08:003 of 3: Eurostar Testconference 2012 – Lessons learned and to learn...The testlab and the community Hub

I didn't write down all the presentations I have seen or all discussions I've had during the conference. Nor all ideas that popped up.

But I would like to mention the Test lab, which was positioned in the expo hall. This was great, until now the test lab was hidden away somewhere in a conference room, but now it was open and visible to see. They had computers to test on and real robots you could test. If you found a bug, you got a nice t-shirt and I wear it with proud. When you get to a conference where the Test Lab of Bart Knaack or James Lyndsay is, reserve a few hours to spend there. You could be testing software with some of the well known testers in the world and learn something new.
Community Hub
Something new at the Eurostar conference, a room where five minutes talks were executed, discussion and to relax. Also the Eurostar minmap of learning was made in this room. This is something like a big beautiful mindmap where the visitors of Eurostar could put subjects (by yellow papers) on the map, that are drawn visually by Nathalie Roosenboom.

I visited the community hub a few times, even got a free book there: "Who wants this book?": Experiences of sofware test automation The authors (Dorothy Graham and Mark Fewster) were there, so they signed my copy. This was one of the new books I wanted to read, and didn't buy yet.
The workshop of Marcus Gärtner
I like subjects that are not really about testing but help you in your daily work. I also like to be challenged in thinking and this workshop had both aspects. Marcus Gärtner named his workshop "Beyond testing". It was really way beyond testing and we all had difficulty keeping up the pace.

We started of with some questions about testing, but very quickly we had to form groups and start thinking and discussing the question: What is System thinking? We created a mind map and got even to complexity theory and other subjects.

Later on I talked about systems thinking and was advised by to read Quality software systems Volume 1-2 by Jerry Weinberg. I knew the books, but now I finally ordered them.

The discussion in our group in mind map format.

The workshop continued about communication and aspects of communication, in combination with playing role games in this workshop. Also in blog 1 of 3 of this series I mentioned the cause effect diagram. This was discussed and tried out by ourselves. After that Marcus talked about change in organizations and a way to support that process via a certain method. And even the break in between was a communication exercise (talk to a member of another group how that group had interpreted systems thinking).

So this was a fully filled 2,5 hour, very interactive, much to learn and think about session. OK, I was lost there a few times, but the subjects are in my notes and will certainly guide me for more learning.

The end
A conference ends and then there is time to think and reflect. I guess the conference was better then I expected beforehand. So maybe next year again to Eurostar... Well, as I really like the 'big cheese' who runs the show next time, there is no hesitating in that and I expect even a better conference next time.

To summarize the lessons learned and to learn
So to summarize this, also to check on later in the next year, these are things, because of this conference I will actively use. If other ideas pop up, that's great, but for now:

Some books were mentioned that I will have to read now

Little black book on test design (R. Edgren) Well I read this already, but will have to revisit it, being some time ago.

Quality software systems Volume 1-2 (Jerry Weinberg) In fact I ordered alsy volume 3

The lean startup (Eric Ries)

Solving problems (is innovating)

Is it really a problem, maybe there is a problem behind the problem, what is the real cause of the problem?

Always check if the problem still exists.

Defocus on what is perceived and try to see the bigger issue behind it.

Start using cause-effect diagrams

Test reporting, explaining testing

Study reporting by for example visualizing testing and testing results (Research blogs that write about this subject)

Practice status reporting of a project: Stop where you are while working in a project and explain the status of the project in 30 seconds.

Stop using as much as possible the ISTQB words and use the business language for this.

Try to explain testing without using the word “test” in it. This is also something I heard from other presentations and on the Agile Testing Days. (Did the challenge this week, creating a plan to improve and structure testing, without using the word testing. That was a challenge, still have to refine this :-))

Create improving Testing within organizations checklist

testing dojos, focus on learning and training for testers

let people speak on conferences, introducing test work groups

less documentation by using mind mapping techniques and low tech dashboards

test improvement by session (session based test improvement?)

Cognitive biases

create checklist for overcoming biases and he mentioned

always be cautious when making decisions

Reference class forecasting (check with other industries and compare).

Double check the Michael Bolton presentation about confirmation bias

Skills I will work on the next months

Influencing other people

systems thinking

Lots of more ideas were going around, but I have to channelize this in this way. I hope it helps you too in some odd way that I wrote this down. See you!

And now on to my notes for the Agile Testing Days of last week... Pfew.

Mainly I use them for taking notes and use them to reflect later. But they also give a feeling of the overall conference I guess. So I share some pictures here that were good enough to publish on the blog. (if you want the original picture, don't hesitate to mail me)

Huib Schoots and changing the context at the Rabobank
The world of testing is changing: As we have been using methods like TMap and ISTQB in the past, which could fit perfectly in your project or organization, the big differences in organizations and projects lead us to defer from these methods or even throw them away completely. This to rethink testing and get a better fit with testing in certain ways. The Rabobank is doing so and is a good example of introducing these (new) ideas in bigger organizations, where you would expect it not to be possible or at least too difficult to get this accomplished.

This because organizations such as banks have big IT machines that exist for a long time and have certain ways of working and people that do not want to change after working for 40 years in the same job.

Not only testing, but the world of IT is changing and the way we think about software development. The agile revolution is one of these changes. And this was also introduced in the bank and was as a hook to improve testing too.

Low tech dashboards as a way to replace comprehensive reporting

Some actions were taken, as doing testing dojos, focus on learning and training for testers, let people speak on conferences, experiment with Exploratory testing, less documentation by using mind mapping techniques and low tech dashboards, introducing test workgroups to figure things out and get the testability on a higher focus within the organisation.

These are all things I can put on my own test improvement checklist. I will do that and search out some more about those subjects and will think about how to introduce those within organizations when I'm on a project of such kind.

Graham Freeburn and mapping your way to better testing
And the change is also happening in the way we look at test process improvement. Graham Freeburn had used Test Proces Improvement (TPI) in the past. But he learned that the TPI method is too much focused on processes and has less focus on actual skills.

So he created another way to improve testing processes. Now he uses sessions such as kick offs, presentations and creates an action plan from these sessions. Because of this there is constant communication between him and the people and between the teams in organisations. He uses the Goals problem tree and checks constantly with the business goals. For working out and collaborating he mainly uses mind maps.

Best quote: If you deliver value every time, the customer will worry less about costs

Important skill he mentioned: Influencing other people.

The sessions he mentioned that he uses are good to put on my test improvement list. So instead of asking questions and do interviews, communicate, think, explore within these sessions to get the quality of testing higher. The outcome would fit an organization better than the standard formal process of TPI.

Cognitive biases
Martin Jansson (from the test lab) already mentioned this to me while talking in the test lab: “Knowing the requirements could cause you to not see certain aspects of a product and could eventually lead to missing some bugs.”

I checked ‘cognitive biases’ on Wikipedia: “A cognitive bias is a pattern of deviation in judgment that occurs in particular situations, which may sometimes lead to perceptual distortion, inaccurate judgment, illogical interpretation, or what is broadly called irrationality.”

The inaccurate judgment and perceptual distortion would be issues we as testers are dealing with every day.

"It is the human tendency to make systematic errors in certain
circumstances based on cognitive factors rather than evidence."

A human is easily influenced. The speaker gave an example of a scientific research project. People were asked to write down (or think) about the last two digits of their social security number. After they were asked about this, they participated in an auction. The result was that people with higher numbers in their head because of a higher number at the end of the social security number ended up bidding more than the others.

Some ways to overcome biases and he mentioned are the use of checklists, always be cautious when making decisions (black hat thinking), reference class forecasting (check with other industries and compare).

Later that day I spoke with Srikanth and about the difficulty I have with biases, namely not recognizing them, he said, that it is good to be aware at least these exist. (so a bit of curing from biases here in his talk)

I will have to update my checklists I already have and will use them also constantly. Until now my own checklists are all over the place and not structured to my needs. Rethink, use new ideas and structure this for future use.

Good to check: Michael Bolton has a presentation about the confirmation bias here http://www.developsense.com/presentations/2010-04-ConfirmationBias.pdf
